About Tristan's Carnivorous Plants

Barbara and Kim Magnuson have been growing CP's for many years and operated Tristan's Carnivorous Plants in Oregon for about ten years. Having moved to Hawaii a few years back, they now grow carnivorous plants on the island of Hawaii.
Tristan's concentrates mainly on Sarracenia and Nepenthes, but we also raise some Heliamphora, Cephalotus, Pinguicula, and Drosera along with a few
Utricularia. Kim is a retired sea captain for Matson Lines and probably is
one of a very few that have had CP's at sea on board ships. The crews were
definitely entertained, although between ports, it became a bit difficult
for the plants to find insects.
Tristan's grows all our plants outside. They seem to be much hardier in that atmosphere. Although we were afraid that Sarracenia would not receive enough dormancy to grow here in Hawaii, they have done just fine for 3 years creating their own dormancy with photoperiod shortening in the fall and winter.
When possible, Tristan's likes to sell rooted cuttings of Nepenthes as they mature much faster than tiny plants. This rewards the grower in much less time. Although occasionally, on some species, we do have smaller plants, we make an effort to try and please the customer. We normally ship on Mondays
following the day we receive payment on plants. We try and keep shipping
costs down and normally ship Priority Mail which gets plants to the
mainland in 3-4 days.
